Improving Down-sampled Images Utilising Interpolation and Super-resolution Techniques

Tel: (02)8662-5911 ext. 140, Fax: (02)2662-9592, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Generally, a down-sampled image is merely interpolated for the resizing purpose; however, this interpolated image is blurred. To improve this image quality, we use the improved Poisson maximum a posteriori (MAP) super-resolution algorithm to reconstruct the high spatial-frequency spectrum of any interpolated image. Utilising the hybrid scheme, interpolation coupled with super-resolution, this research has studied two important applications, resolution enhancement of grey-level and colour down-sampled images. Simulation results demonstrate that this proposed hybrid scheme substantially improves the quality of down-sampled images over conventional linear interpolation.
